FemiLab: Dump the Decaf?Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 3:35 pm — admin
I am a type A, no doubt about it. So I routinely skip caffeine except in the small doses that come from my indulgence in dark chocolate. But as evidence mounts that caffeine may ward off dementia and help reverse symptoms in those with Alzheimer’s, I am starting to eye the caffeinated life. When mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) were dosed with caffeine – the equivalent of 5 cups of coffee a day—their impaired memory improved. And, back-to-back studies published online in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease show caffeine significantly decreased abnormal levels of the protein linked to AD, both in the brains and in the blood of the mice models of AD—that is mice genetically engineered to develop AD. This means that caffeine may be a useful treatment for people with AD. What about prevention? What to do now? You know the drill. If caffeine has been ruled out by your MD, stick to that advice. But for us Type As, the evidence is mounting that a cup or two of caffeine in the morning may be worth a jitter or two. Keep watching for the human trials that give more solid evidence. i can't help lol when reading this, as i imagine caffeine fired up Alzheimer's patients ransacking the nursing home. some 1 is gonna have to give the staff serious loods to deal with 5 cupped dementia!
sorry for my poor taste, but there is humor here!
I wonder if it matters where
I wonder if it matters where the caffeine comes from. I love coffee but I feel at my healthiest when I drink green tea daily instead. Only problem - green tea REALLY stains your teeth! That's what my dentist told me as to why my teeth suddenly turned yellowy. Oh, vanity.
The authors of the study gave
The authors of the study gave pure caffeine, not coffee, to the mice, so any source will work.
I am a huge fan of my whitening trays. The best $300 bucks I ever spent--ten years ago!. Once every six months I plop them in with some gel and vamoos goes the stains in the time it took to watch Law and Order episode. Too bad I couldn't get away with so little exercise time:-)
I do love my morning coffee.
I do love my morning coffee. Now I can have my second or third cup without feeling guilty.
Interesting, especially as
Interesting, especially as women live longer than men and by default will see more Alzheimers.
And per Wikipedia, even in the very old, women have incresed rates of AD compared to men.
There are also sex differences in the incidence rates, women having a higher risk of developing AD particularly in the population older than 85.[179][180]
