Women who use hormone therapy are at marginally increased risk for dying from breast cancer, according to a new analysis from the Women's Health Initiative in JAMA. (An earlier analysis from the WHI found a higher incidence of breast cancer but did not report on mortality.)
In the WHI, some 17,000 postmenopausal women were randomized to estrogen plus progestin or to placebo. Treatment lasted a mean of 5.6 years. After 11 years' follow-up, women receiving combined hormone therapy had a higher rate of invasive breast cancer than those on placebo (0.42% vs. 0.34% per year), and these cancers were more often present in the lymph nodes. The treatment group also had higher breast cancer mortality (2.6 vs. 1.3 per 10,000 women per year).
