Feministing as Female Enfeeblers--Just Say NO!Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at 1:09 pm — M.A. Liginter
Recently, this popped up on Feministing.com : “. Sex and the City-I know I'm going to get some shit for this, but I have to ask how we can consider something truly feminist that has NO CLASS or RACE ANALYSIS. I enjoy it. I'm down to watch it. But do we have to call it feminist?” Now poor dear Courtney Martin, the author of this graf, seems to be under the impression that for something to be feminist it must be espouse the rights of the poor and the ethnic. Time to take a trip to Merriam-Webster Land, Courtney.
Now, dearest female enfeebler Courtney, I am a huge fan of animal welfare and humane treatment for animals. But I am also a fool if I try to say that feminism can’t be feminism unless we include animal rights issues under our hood. Get a grip kittyCAT. So when it comes to top female imposters for feminists…., Miss Courtney may want to include herself on that list! PS. Folks, I am in no way endorsing Sex and the City as feminist. This is what Hollywood and HBO think of women and this is the culture they give us to grow up in and around. Sex and the City is billboard for: Women sex us boys up, yeah that is empowerment, to let us fuck you day in and day out, without emotional connection, but always remember you are nuttn’ more than the relationship you don’t have…te hee, hee. We could go on here for hours about the damage Sex and the City has done, but the point of today’s column is not Carrie and Company, but Courtney Von Wig-nut telling women that NO thing can be feminism unless it also works on racism and classsism. Miss Courtney Martin is determined to make women believe they, at 51% of the population, they, as the most abused (human) group on the planet, can’t work for JUST women’s rights and equality….we must first and foremost fix poverty and all race relations and then.. maybe then we can think about feminism as a women only issue. HA. Classic! Women undermining women’s importance! And pay attention here!!!: Courtney is a feminist voice the liberal press (she is voice of feminism for American Prospect Online) likes. Ask yourself why? |

I wholeheartedly agree with
I wholeheartedly agree with FemiSex on this. It takes the cake to do damage to women by insisting that Feminism must include battling racism or not be feminism and then whine that you are being picked on.
Keep up the very brave voice, FemiSex!
@nik: You must not read this
@nik:
You must not read this site, because FemiSex goes after all venues. It seems childish for you to say hey, why is FemiSex picking on Feministing. Articles on this site go after sexism in the New York. Times. The New Yorker, Atlantic, Wapo, HuffPo etc. I myself have taken this site's advice to call MSNBC and complain, and was first in line to call the Atlantic re that puke Andrew Sullivan. So to FemiSex, i say, keep it up. Don't be afraid to speak out when feminists do damaging things to women. Atta girl to FemiSex! Keep the ball bouncing! Feministing is a good site, but what after this year and the misogyny, I would say they are not so very effective.
I think you must not have
I think you must not have read my comment very thoroughly.
Clearly it is possible for someone self-identifying as a feminist to say things that other feminists do not agree with you or feel is damaging, but sometimes these conflicts are nuanced in the sense that they display differences of opinion that need not end in the rejection of either perspective. In this case, it is the opinion that it is undesirable to "divert" one's attention to the rights of other groups.
Do I even need to tell you that feminism and the struggle for LGBT rights are intrinsically linked by the idea of gendered roles? Or that poverty disproportionately affects women? Or that there are race- and region-specific issues for women?
I don't see that there's anything wrong in the tack that Femisex takes, that some of these issues are peripheral to feminism and do not need to be treated here, but I felt that the criticism of Feministing had become vitriolic and unintellectual. The answer that I was given in response to my criticism, though, was intelligent and reasonable. If I thought Femisex was a write-off in terms of accountability and dialogue, I wouldn't have bothered; on the contrary, I find the writing here very sharp.
Congratulations on making that call to MSNBC, though, since clearly that qualifies you to call out Faux Feminists wherever you see them.
Why, oh why, are you spending
Why, oh why, are you spending so much time and energy trashing Feministing? I'm just your average reader; I try to get a broad perspective from a number of different blogs, but every time I come here you seem to have found some new fault with Feministing. I'll tell you what; I think their broader coverage is appropriate, and it does nothing for my impression of you that you take issue with that. As I think was pointed out the first time around; women are not all white, middle-class and heterosexual (not on other blogs, at least) and I don't see what this purpose your critique consistently serves.
Also, I notice that it isn't the only brief, vitriolic piece on this blog devoted to undermining to others providing news aggregation, analysis and interpretation.
Basically, all you're doing is playing up unnecessary tensions. Self-examination of the movement as a whole is important, but the way you are doing it is not constructive. Pick up the damn ball.
Hi -- look... I like the
Hi -- look... I like the site; i link to it! But feminist writers did a lot! of damage to women this election year. It was odd and bizzare and hearbreaking. FemiSex has gone after Salon's "feminist" writers when they do my bad, and Slate's XX women are a particular focus as well. e.g, Hillary Harridan's was a nice example of anti-feminist work on Slate.
re the above item...When Feministing says that something is not feminist if it does not deal with race and poverty well...well then Houston we have a problem!! This is a HUGE disservice to women!
There has been a massive Failure of Feminism to rid this country of misogyny. It is TIME for a critical look as why this is so. If an employee fails to stem the red ink on his project, it IS fair to look at him critically!
The end result hope of this site is not to make nice and hold hands but to end misogyny as an acceptable form of life in the county. This site stands by the fact that women are 51% of the population and we don't need to take every special interest group under our wing. As a matter of fact, doing so has HURT women's rights in this country. Feminist work needs to see how far women have fallen behind--way behind. (e.g., see our story: violence agaisnt women soars in U.S.) We NEED to focus soley on women until substantial gains are achieved. Perhaps when i don't see women referred to as Bitch in the New York Times, then we will re-visist. In the meantime our ball is bouncing to the 51% beat--and we put all women under that collective, red, blue, white, black, poor, rich, foreign born. Women need not divide themselves by race or richers--we are all screwed these days!
As a male I am always stymied
As a male I am always stymied when women's groups feel compelled to save every group but their own. I am a union member and would not want this Courtney gal as my union boss. She'd be out to save the chickens rather than get me the best wage hours, etc.
ps, I found this site on Real Clear Politics and it is now my guilty pleasue. nice to have someone other than rightwingers stick it to media bias.
