Surfside Puma: -- Ellen Sirlieaf, Women’s Equality Day, and Hate Crimes and more!

I haven’t done a Puma Surf in a while so here you go: From PumaPac/Murphy:

In the recent New York Times Magazine issue devoted to the plight of women worldwide, Deborah Solomon interviewed Liberian president Ellen Sirlieaf, first woman head of state in Africa in history. She asked Madam President whether if women ruled the world, war would still exist. Sirleaf’s answer:
“No. It would be a better, safer and more productive world. A woman would bring an extra dimension to that task — and that’s a sensitivity to humankind. It comes from being a mother.”
I love that answer. If women ruled the world, there would be no war. I don’t know if she’s right, but I would really like to find out.
But my favorite quote from the interview is in the last question:
Q: Why do you think we’ve never had a female president in the United States?
A: “I have to ask you that question. You’ve got to vote for her.”

Nice outtake Murphy!!
But I’d remind the estimable President Sirlieaf: we DID vote for her and in greater numbers than any candidate in primary history. The Establishment –the backroom dealers and dealmakers blocked HRC. She won the popular vote over Mr. Obama; she racked up the mostest bestest, ja ja sic sic, numbers of votes. The Establishment put her Down.

Violet reminds that-

It’s Women’s Equality Day! Did you know that? Today commemorates the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. I’m afraid it totally snuck up on me this year; I haven’t gotten my Women’s Equality Day cards out or even decorated my Women’s Equality Day tree.

Yikes we missed that one too! shame on us!

And something I missed but find most worthy of a re-visit!
From Nancy at the Journal of Feminist Insight:
http://journaloffeministinsight.blogspot.com/2009/08/media-wont-acknowle...

The media’s sexist reporting of yesterday’s Bridgeville, PA murder rampage is another example proving they won’t acknowledge hate crimes against women. A male blogger wrote for months about his problems relating to women then walked into an all-female dance class and shot twelve women, yet none of the articles I read mention the words hate crime, bigot, sexist and the reporters didn’t call feminist groups for a quote.

Read the rest, it is good!

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A majority of independent voters disapprove of how Barack Obama's handling his job as president, according to a new national poll.

Fifty-three percent of independents questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday say they disapprove of how Obama's handling his duties in the White House, with 43 percent in approval. That result marks the first time in a CNN poll that a majority of independents give the president's performance a thumbs-down.

While we're on the subject.

"Obama’s job approval is down to about 50 percent. All presidents fall from their honeymoon highs, but in the history of polling, no newly elected American president has fallen this far this fast.

Anxiety is now pervasive. Trust in government rose when Obama took office. It has fallen back to historic lows. Fifty-nine percent of Americans now think the country is headed in the wrong direction."

Voters often have only a fuzzy sense of what each individual proposal actually does, but more and more have a growing conviction that if the president is proposing it, it must involve big spending, big government and a fundamental departure from the traditional American approach."
