Yesterday, on a comment thread I reminded readers of a particular sexist trick used to disembowel female pols—the old: she’s too polarizing theme. Specifically, I mentioned Hollywood’s David (Obama) Geffen’s charge that Hillary Clinton was “incredibly polarizing.”
Geffen and Obama had put their male heads together and decided the best way to beat the bi$ch was to paint her as “polarizing.” Missy Maureen Dowd was contacted and she agreed to printed Geffen’s orchestrated remarks in her column.
Hillary=Polarizing now with the NYTimes imprimatur.
Polarizing = Bi%ch=manipulative=shrill, and on it goes.
Today, I had no sooner posted a comment on the same thread by Toledo, cautioning folks not to fall for the women-are-too-polarizing bit, when I heard the news that Palin is leaving office. (Sorry, so tardy on this, but I’m at the beach and trying to ignore news for the w/end.) I stuck my head in over at the Daily Beast and sure nuff, got this Headline:
Palin's Polarizing Departure.
That was the header DB editors put on a short item at the Daily Beast that linked to a story over at Politico titled:
Palin resignation splits GOP.
An excerpt:
These varied reactions were an echo of the debates that have followed Palin every step since her nomination as John McCain’s running mate 10 months ago — a surprise that turned out to be just the first of many surprises served up by one of the most colorful and polarizing American political figures in a generation.
Whoa…Remember the olden days, when Hillary was as polarizing as a women could possibly be?
Funny how Palin is just as Polarizing as Hillary. Guess what kids. Any woman who wants to be King will be cast as "polarizing."
The MEDIA will decree this, and you will begin to believe it. After all, every study shows that the more we hear something, especially from those in authority, the more we tend to believe it.
Women are just polarizing. That is the truth and don’t deny it! So goes the media spin.
If that doesn't work in and of itself, just call them bitches and whores and sluts outright. Of course, the public is too dumb to recognized this as media's desperate attempts to keep woman from gaining real power, right? So they think and maybe they are right? Decide for yourselves!
Watch out: when polarizing is used as a descriptive it is REALLY being used as a verb, thus a hatchet, on women
Let's all recognize that when polarizing is used as a verb it is always used to keep women from gaining power!
Remember now... those who cling to guns and religion is NOT a polarizing statement, but those who love their country is. HA! luv the media spin. And the bigotry.
Politics is all about polarization: it is an oppositional operation or we'd have an autocracy.
But women who practice the art of politics are polarization at its apogee; for the men--they are the great uniters! Yak attack!

What is even sadder is that
What is even sadder is that the majority of hate toward Palin come from women, women who are supposed to be free thinkers and liberated but instead have caved into the innuendos of the elitist because, " oh dear", Palin is just a middle class, hard working, don't go to social parties woman, and has 5 children of which one is special needs. We can't have that can we?
Nice pick BlogHer! It is
Nice pick BlogHer!
It is just sickening to see the hit job the media did to both Hillary (my pick) and Palin. I have just about had it! After reading the lastest installment of Smear Palin at Vanity Fair it occured to me that mainstream male-dominated media is too much for any woman to go up against. Until women have equality in voice and positions of power in media it will be an endless reply of male bashing women and women who want a seat at the table going along for the ride.
Tina Brown, I liked, until she went whacko on Octomom and then Palin. Neither woman (Octomom or Palin) do I see eye to eye with, but the disparity of venom that the Daily Beast showed to these women was shocking.
There are PLENTY of women like Octomom who have more children than they can reasonably afford or pay proper attention, but Ms. Brown would never have the courage needed to address that problem. Rather she did what cowards in media do-- go after what will bring them the lowest life forms: women bashers. Re Palin, Tina Brown has lost all sense of reality. She wants Palin to sit back and take it like Hillary did, but in the end all that got Hillary was a backseat to the man she beat in the primary!
I think it is very
I think it is very discouraging. I read comment on other posts that spend all day long denying sexism when it is staring them in the face. It is like walking into a planet where the goal is to demean women! How do you keep going? I am so discouraged. The guys I date are all about trashing women as hoes and they talk about Palin Pussy as a spot. And don't tell me to find nice guys, because these are the nice guys, they think Olbermann is some kind of superhero!
I was upset to watch Cynthia
I was upset to watch Cynthia Tucker, the black female journalist, opine on "This Week" that women who run for high office should not complain about the added burden placed on females who run for high office.
She admitted that the media had a double standard for women, but instead of calling for that double standard to be erased, she put forth that Palin was a wimp for not taking it.
I wonder if the media, her world, had called Obama racist names and reported in such a biased fashion towards Obama if she would be so accommodating to the double standard? Doubt it with a 10 spot.
Man o man do I wish women could get together on ending double standards for women. (ok, make that woman o woman!)
I am becoming very
I am becoming very disenchanted with the Daily Beast. I had hoped for a fair shake to women from DB and at first is looked good. Downhill these days. Keep on chugging along, FS.
spot on! Keep itemizing media
spot on!
Keep itemizing media sexism! thank you!
light bulb flash! I've have
light bulb flash! I've have no recall of male politicians being called polarizing.
It would be a good study to see how often the word is used in conjunction with women, especially powerful women.
It DOES seem that the media love using that word against women.
omg-- the DB is going nuts
omg-- the DB is going nuts over this Palin thing. The anti-feminist Michelle Goldberg (she also didn't like Hillary in a BIG way) has written:
But Palin has long had an almost dementedly inflated sense of her own destiny.
http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2009-07-02/is-she-a-narci...
OMG! So now running for mayor and governor and accepting the offer of VP is how Goldberg defines "dementedly inflated sense of her own destiny!"
GMAFB (gimmeafriggnbreak!)
Clearly Goldberg is selling out women in order to advance her career!
good point!
